The gun laws in this country are very strict and very specific. You have the right to own guns under the U.S. Constitution, but if you do not follow the laws exactly, a simple mistake can lead to you being charged with a serious crime.

Summary of California Weapon Offenses
In California, gun ownership and possession are legal. If you are 18 years old or older and not prohibited from owning a gun, you may have a loaded or unloaded gun in your home, temporary residence, campsite or place of business. There are a number of limitations on possession and concealed carry, which can lead to felony or misdemeanor charges. For example, if you are convicted of a felony, you may be prohibited from carrying a gun for life. For certain misdemeanor offenses, you may be prohibited from owning a gun for 10 years. You are also prohibited from bringing a gun into places like a school or airport.
Some common weapons-related charges are the following:
Felon in Possession of a Firearm (Penal Code Section 29800): A person who has been convicted of a felony is prohibited from owning any type of firearm for the rest of their life. If you are caught with a gun, whether someone gave it to you, or someone in your household owned it, you could be charged with this crime.
Unlawful Discharge of a Firearm (Penal Code Section 246.3): Willfully discharging a firearm or BB gun in a way that could result in injury or death to someone else. This will be a misdemeanor or felony depending on the weapon.
Charges that can be either felonies or misdemeanors are called “wobblers.” If you are charged with a wobbler, it is especially important to have an attorney by your side who will fight to get your charges and potential punishment as low as possible, even dismissed.
